EPDM Colour Design and Inlay Graphics for Playgrounds

EPDM colour design is where a playground stops being a safety surface and starts being a place. The same wet pour system that cushions a fall can carry a shoreline, a serpent, a hopscotch grid, a school badge or a sensory trail. For specifiers, schools, local authorities and landscape architects, colour and inlay graphics are not decoration. They are how children read the space and how partially sighted users navigate it. This guide explains how colour schemes, themes and inlay graphics are planned and formed.

Planning EPDM colour design for themed play areas

Most colour schemes fail at the first decision, treating colour as a finish rather than a material. EPDM granules are pigmented through, so colour is chosen at the granule stage, not painted on afterwards. The palette has to be fixed before laying begins.

Choosing the palette

Start from the play story rather than a colour chart. A seaside theme needs sand, sea and a green headland. A nature trail wants grass greens, bark browns and a blue stream. A school scheme usually anchors on the badge or house colours. Choose a small palette, typically three to five colours, and give each one a job: a base, an accent for the route, and brighter colours only where they carry meaning.

Order EPDM sample patches early and view them outdoors, wet and dry, at full scale, since a colour that reads well as a chip can look different across a hundred square metres.

Themes that stay legible

A theme works when a child recognises it from six metres away. Big, simple motifs read better than dense detail. A serpent is a wide sinuous band of one colour. A pond is a single shape with a darker outline. Detail invisible from the boundary is wasted budget, so design graphics at the scale of the space and view the drawing from the entrance.

The theme also has to survive the equipment. Towers, swings and slides sit on the surface and cover parts of it, so plan the main motif around the equipment layout.

How inlay graphics are formed in wet pour and EPDM

Wet pour surfacing is built in two layers: a rubber base layer for depth and cost efficiency, and a coloured EPDM wearing course on top. Graphics are formed within the wearing course while it is still wet, which gives wet pour its near unlimited design freedom compared with rubber tiles. Templates and cut-ins

Two techniques do most of the work. Templates, usually metal or plastic formers, are pressed into the wet wearing course to hold a clean edge while a second colour is poured inside and trowelled flush. They suit crisp, repeatable shapes such as numbers, letters and simple motifs.

Cut-ins are the alternative. The base colour is laid and allowed to partially cure, then the graphic shape is cut out and the new colour poured into the recess. Cut-ins suit flowing shapes, lettering and logos where a fixed former would not follow the line.

The laying sequence

Because the coloured layer is laid wet, graphics are scheduled within a single pour. The team pours the background first, sets the formers or cuts the shapes, then trowels the second and third colours in while every layer is at the same curing stage. That bonds them into one continuous sheet with no glued joint to lift or catch a wheel.

Why EPDM is the pigment-stable option

Colour on a playground takes hard use: ultraviolet all summer, frost all winter, wet leaves and constant traffic. EPDM, ethylene propylene diene monomer, is the standard material for the coloured wearing course because the pigment is locked into the granule during manufacture. It does not chalk or wash away the way paint does, and its colour change is gradual and even rather than patchy.

Cheaper painted or dyed rubber looks vivid on handover day and fades within a season or two, and skimping on the granule is the one saving that undermines the whole scheme.

Colour contrast, accessibility and wayfinding

EPDM colour design is also wayfinding infrastructure. A well planned surface tells a user where to walk, where to stop and where to be careful, and it does so for everyone, including users who cannot rely on visual acuity.

Designing for partially sighted users

Partially sighted users navigate by luminance contrast far more than by hue. Two colours that look different to a fully sighted adult can read as the same grey if their light reflectance values are close. Keep the primary route a consistent colour that contrasts in lightness with surrounding zones, mark hazard approaches such as a swing arc or slide exit with a contrasting band, and change colour at every change of level or function.

Texture adds a second channel through a cane or a shoe sole, read even in low light.

Inclusive play and sensory zoning

Colour zoning also makes a space legible for neurodiverse users. Use colour to signal function: an active zone, a quiet zone, a sensory zone. Keep the palette calm in retreat areas and reserve high saturation for active play, and avoid dense swirling patterns because visual noise is what many users need less of. Design does not compromise impact performance

A common worry is that cutting shapes into the wearing course weakens the surface. It does not. Impact attenuation comes from the total thickness, primarily the base layer, not from the colour of the top. A graphic is a colour change within the same continuous wearing course, so there is no joint to open up. The critical fall height is set by the build up and verified by testing, and is unaffected by whether the top layer is one colour or six.

What matters is that the thickness profile follows the equipment, with the correct depth under each fall zone, as set out in our guide to critical fall height and EN 1177. Wet pour is typically laid between 15 mm and 130 mm depending on the required critical fall height.

The one place colour and safety interact is at the edges of graphics. Keep graphic edges flush and well trowelled so they never form a lip that could trip a child or catch a wheelchair castor.

Keeping colour and graphics looking new

EPDM colour is durable, but it is not zero maintenance. Dirt and moss settle into the open texture and dull the colour long before the pigment fades. A scheduled clean with a low pressure wash, plus removal of leaves and standing water, keeps the original palette visible.

Minor scuffs in high traffic areas can be spot repaired by cutting out and re pouring the damaged patch, which is one reason to record the EPDM colour code.

Can any graphic be formed in wet pour rubber?

Yes. Any shape that can be templated or cut into the wet wearing course can be reproduced, from simple numbers to complex logos and characters. Very fine detail below a few centimetres becomes impractical because the granule size limits crispness, so simplify lettering and thin lines.

Does a complex colour scheme affect the critical fall height?

No. The critical fall height is set by the total thickness and build up of the system, not by the number of colours in the top layer. Graphics are formed within the same continuous wearing course, so there is no joint and no loss of impact performance.

How long does EPDM colour last before it fades?
