EPDM Granules: Grades, Sizes and Quality Guide
EPDM granules are the coloured synthetic rubber particles that form the wear layer of a wet pour safety surface, the infill of some sports systems, and the visible finish of most seamless rubber landscaping. They are also the biggest single driver of how a surface looks after five summers. Buyers often treat granule as a commodity and compare only price per tonne, which is how sites end up faded, patchy or shedding colour. This guide sets out what EPDM granules are, how they differ from the alternatives, what the grades and sizes mean, and the checks worth running before you buy.
What EPDM Is, Chemically
EPDM stands for ethylene propylene diene monomer, a synthetic elastomer produced by polymerising ethylene and propylene together with a small proportion of a diene comonomer that provides cross-linking sites for vulcanisation.
The critical structural point is that the main polymer backbone is fully saturated. It contains no carbon to carbon double bonds; the unsaturation needed for curing sits on side chains instead. That single design decision explains most of the material’s practical behaviour:
- Ozone and UV resistance. Ozone and ultraviolet light attack double bonds in a rubber backbone. With none to attack, EPDM does not crack, chalk or embrittle the way natural rubber or SBR does under prolonged sun.
- Colour stability. The polymer is stable and light in colour, so it can be pigmented across a wide palette and hold that pigment. Carbon black is not needed as a structural filler.
- Heat and water resistance. It tolerates a broad temperature range and does not swell significantly in water, which is why it is also used for roofing membranes and weather seals.
- Elastic recovery. It stays flexible at low temperature and returns to shape after repeated compression, which matters on a surface walked over thousands of times a day.

Coated SBR looks like a cheap route to a coloured surface and it is, in the literal sense. The colour is a coating on a black particle, so as soon as traffic abrades it, black shows through and the surface goes grey and mottled. TPV can perform well, but market quality is inconsistent and some compounds soften in summer sun. For a wear layer that must look right for its whole design life, EPDM remains the reference material. The Three Grades and What They Are For

Rather than fixating on names, understand the technical variable behind grading: the polymer content of the granule and the consistency of its manufacture. Higher polymer content, tighter size control and better pigment dispersion give a granule that resists abrasion longer and holds colour better. Lower polymer content with more mineral filler gives a granule that is cheaper, still functional, and entirely appropriate in the right setting.
Premium grade
Highest polymer content and the tightest control on size and colour. Specified where the surface is highly visible, heavily trafficked or expected to look correct for a long design life: flagship public playgrounds, splash pads, town centre landscape work, and schemes with detailed colour graphics where fading in one colour would ruin the composition.
Standard grade
The general-purpose specification and the volume choice for most school, nursery and municipal work. Lower polymer content than premium, but it still delivers the fundamental EPDM benefits of colour retention and UV stability. For most projects this is the sensible balance between performance and budget.
Economy grade
Lower polymer content with a higher filler loading. Suited to lower-traffic applications, large areas where budget dominates, back-of-house zones, and projects with a shorter intended life. It is a legitimate engineering choice, but a conscious one. Using economy granule on a slide exit and expecting premium performance is the most common source of disappointment.

Particle size is not cosmetic. It changes texture, binder demand, porosity and the achievable minimum depth of the layer.

A useful detailing rule: a wear layer needs to be at least three to four particle diameters deep to close properly. Laying a 1-4 mm granule at 6 mm produces a weak, open layer that plucks under traffic. If the design demands a thin coloured layer, change the granule size rather than forcing the depth.
Colour Range and How to Specify It
EPDM granules are available across a broad palette, from bright primaries through to greys, terracottas, sands and muted greens for heritage and landscape settings. Blends of two or more colours are commonly used to create speckled effects and natural-looking tones.
- Approve a physical sample panel, not a printed swatch or screen image. Cured rubber rarely matches a printed reference.
- Order the whole area from one production batch where possible and record the batch reference so later repairs can be matched.
- Be careful with very dark colours in hot climates. Dark surfaces reach high temperatures in direct sun, a real comfort issue on splash pads and bare-foot areas.
- Blends hide wear and contamination better than flat single colours. A flat colour looks superb on day one and shows every scuff by year three.

Binder Ratios and Why They Decide the Outcome
Granules do nothing without a binder. Single-component moisture-cured polyurethane is the standard, and the granule to binder ratio is one of the most consequential numbers on site. As a typical industry range, EPDM wear layers are bound at roughly 16 to 22 percent binder by weight of granule, with finer granules needing the upper end. SBR base layers usually need appreciably less because the particles are larger and the layer is not abraded. Exact ratios depend on binder solids content and granule size and should come from the supplier, not from habit.
- Too little binder. The matrix never develops full strength. The surface plucks, sheds loose granules and fails first at edges and wear points.
- Too much binder. Voids fill, the surface seals over with a glossy skin, drainage falls away and the finish can become slippery when wet. It also wastes the most expensive component in the mix.

Binder chemistry also affects colour. Aromatic polyurethane binders are cheaper but yellow under UV, shifting pale colours noticeably. Aliphatic binders resist yellowing and are the right choice with whites, pale greys, light blues and any scheme where colour fidelity is a design requirement.
Quality Red Flags When Buying EPDM Granules
- No declared polymer content. A supplier who will not state it is telling you something; it is the primary indicator of grade.
- Excessive dust or fines. Pour a sample from the bag. Heavy fines mean poor screening and will soak up binder and starve the mix.
- Wide size scatter within a declared band. A bag sold as 1-4 mm containing 6 mm lumps and powder will not lay to a consistent texture.
- Colour rubs off on your hand. That is coated granule, not pigmented EPDM. Crush a granule and check the colour runs through the section.
- No batch identification. Without batch numbers you cannot match repairs and cannot trace a problem.
- No compliance documentation. Ask for evidence on hazardous substance content. Relevant frameworks include EN 71-3 on the migration of certain elements and the REACH regulation (EC 1907/2006) with respect to PAH content in rubber granules.
- Damp or poorly stored stock. Moisture in granule reacts prematurely with moisture-cured binder and causes foaming and weak bonds.
- Price far below the market. Coloured virgin elastomer has a floor cost. A quote well under it usually means coated SBR, heavy filler loading, or reprocessed mixed waste.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are EPDM granules recycled or virgin material?
Genuine coloured EPDM granules are made from virgin synthetic EPDM rubber, either ground from cured stock or produced directly. Recycled granule in this market is normally black SBR from tyres. If a product is offered as both recycled and coloured, establish whether the colour runs through the particle or is applied to its surface.
How much granule do I need per square metre?
It depends on layer depth and the compacted density of the mix. Multiply area by layer depth in metres and by the compacted density of the bound material, then confirm against supplier data for the specific granule and binder. Allow a margin for wastage, edge work and future repair stock.
Can EPDM granules be used without an SBR base?
Yes. Full-depth EPDM systems are used where a homogeneous coloured section is required, in wet environments, or where total depth is shallow. The trade-off is cost, since EPDM is considerably more expensive per tonne than SBR.
Will EPDM granules fade?
All pigmented materials change slightly over years of UV exposure, but EPDM is specified precisely because its saturated backbone resists that degradation far better than the alternatives. In practice, a surface that looks faded more often has a yellowing aromatic binder, surface contamination, or coated SBR substituted for genuine EPDM.
Which granule size should I choose for a playground?
For a standard play area wear layer, 1-4 mm is the usual choice: good grip, an open drainage structure and sensible binder consumption. Move to 0.5-1.5 mm where you need fine graphic detail, a smoother finish, or a thinner layer than a coarse granule can support.
Does granule choice change the critical fall height?
